A healthy bunch of grapes already contains everything needed to make a great wine.No corrections, no additives, no alchemy. Just respect. Organic farming is, above all, a matter of awareness. In our vineyards in the Trapani countryside, row by row, plant by plant, every intervention is carried out by hand. The soil is not an inert substrate to be corrected: it is a living ecosystem, populated by countless species of microorganisms that sustain the natural chemical and physical transformations of the earth and nourish the plant and animal biodiversity that surrounds us. “Giving up synthetic chemistry is not a limitation. It is the necessary condition for the territory to truly express itself in the glass.” At the winery, only healthy grapes arrive at the soft press — grapes monitored at every stage of their growth. The result is a wine that carries within it the imprint of the place where it was born: distinctive aromas, a recognisable flavour, an authentic character. No artifice can restore what good farming has already built in the vineyard. The organic philosophy — understood as the enhancement of the grape’s natural qualities and the rigorous application of correct winemaking practices — finds in Rallo wines its fullest expression. Mediterranean Identity
There is a word that comes up often when people talk about Sicilian wine: identity. It is used a great deal, sometimes carelessly, as a label to stick on any bottle with a dialect name or a cave painting on the label. But true identity — the kind you sense on the nose before it ever reaches the palate — is not something you choose at a desk. It is inherited, cultivated, guarded. Or lost, forever. Rallo, the winery that since 1860 has stood on the Marsala seafront facing the Egadi Islands, inside a nineteenth-century baglio, has made Mediterranean identity not a slogan but a daily practice. A posture. A way of inhabiting the landscape. Rallo cultivates vines, wheat and olive trees across three different corners of western Sicily: Alcamo, Marsala and the island of Pantelleria, all within the province of Trapani. Three places that seem almost chosen to prove that the Mediterranean is not a single place but a family of places, each with its own language, each with its own character. Marsala: not just sea, but an infinite linear landscape. A light that cuts horizontally, salt in the air, wind that never stops. It is here that the winery puts down its deepest roots, here that time moves with the slowness of Marsala wine ageing in the barrel. Alcamo: not just land, but a welcoming embrace that receives everything. These are the gentle hills where most of the vineyard hectares extend, in the contrada of Patti Piccolo — hills that speak of the Sicilian interior, of silence, of clay that absorbs the heat of the day and releases it slowly into the night. Pantelleria: not just wind, but sinuous curves revealing an untamed territory. The island that refuses to be tamed, where Zibibbo grows close to the ground to escape the fury of the scirocco, cultivated in the traditional alberello pantesco style, a UNESCO heritage since 2014. In wine, Mediterranean identity goes by the name of native grape variety. This is not oenological nationalism — it is the biology of memory: every ancient variety carries inscribed in its genetics centuries of adaptation to a climate, a soil, a human way of living the land. Rallo has chosen to be, above all, a territory-driven white wine producer. A countercurrent choice in an era when the Mediterranean is often told through powerful reds and toasted oak. We instead place our faith in white: in Catarratto, Grillo, Insolia, Zibibbo. Varieties that have existed on these shores since before wine became a commercial category. At the end of the twentieth century, the Vesco family took over the winery, diversifying the product range and embarking on a determined conversion of the vineyards to organic farming. Today it is Andrea Vesco who leads Cantine Rallo with dedication, personally overseeing every stage of production — from vine to bottle — with the support of a team of over twenty people. The organic choice, within the context of Mediterranean identity, is not a technical detail. It is a cultural position. It means rejecting the logic of maximum yield in favour of balance. Throughout the vineyards, numerous islands of biodiversity are preserved, reducing the incidence of disease. It means recognising that living soil produces living grapes, and that living grapes produce wine capable of saying something true. In the winery, the approach is one of responsibility toward the land — a love of the environment, sustainability, and balance in all things. And further still: wine must be an ethical product that expresses the face of the landscape and the depths of the human spirit. So, what is Mediterranean identity? It is a question worth sitting with unhurriedly — just as one does with a wine that deserves a few minutes in the glass before being drunk. Mediterranean identity is not nostalgia. It is not longing for a lost antiquity, nor the postcard of a motionless landscape. It is, rather, the capacity to make the most of what one is — history, soil, climate, varieties — without being imprisoned by them. It is the creative tension between roots and renewal, between tradition and contemporary awareness. In wine, Mediterranean identity means resisting international standardisation. It means betting that the Grillo of Marsala, with its aromatic profile, needs no Chardonnay to be great. That the Catarratto of Alcamo, with its lively acidity and mineral freshness, has nothing to apologise for. It means, finally, understanding that the Mediterranean is not a backdrop. It is a subject. A demanding interlocutor that calls for respect, continuity, care. Rallo knows this well: every harvest is a conversation with this sea, this wind, this light. And every bottle is a reply.
