Strangers in One’s Own Home

There is a form of disorientation that knows no forests or fog, that needs no crossroads or starless nights. It is the disorientation of those who inhabit a place without truly dwelling in it, who walk the same streets every day and cannot make them their own, as if the ground beneath their feet always belonged to someone else. The modern city welcomes us, but on the condition that we not touch it. It allows us to pass through it, to consume it, to fund it with our presence, but not to leave a trace there. A flower planted in a public flowerbed is a violation. A handwritten sign on a pole is vandalism. A person sleeping on a bench is a problem to be solved. Public space has become, over time, a space without a public: perfectly regulated, perfectly foreign. And so contemporary man lives in an environment he cannot shape, one that bears no mark of his hands, that does not answer to his gaze. He is granted, at most, sovereignty over the four walls of his home, which he can repaint, furnish, transform — but it is there, within those walls, that he spends the smallest part of his day. The rest of his time belongs to offices designed by someone else and streets planned by someone else. He lives, in essence, as a guest. As a stranger in a place that bears his own address. This is not merely a problem of urban aesthetics or poorly conceived public policy. It concerns the very structure of human experience. When we cannot leave an imprint on a place, when the space carries no memory of us, we cannot orient ourselves within it — not in the geographic sense, but in the older and more essential one: the sense of knowing where we are, who we are, what we belong to. Contemporary urban space has been conceived as a grid: neutral, measurable, interchangeable. But man does not orient himself by grids; he orients himself by signs, by thresholds, by stories carved into walls, by habits that settle into corners. One lives in a place without belonging to it. One passes through, consumes, forgets. And the place, bearing no trace of us, forgets in turn. Perhaps this is the sharpest paradox of urban modernity: that the environment in which man has invested the most — in concrete, in planning, in regulation — has become the one in which he feels least at home. And yet there are those who have not lost themselves. Those who have never stopped treating the land as an interlocutor, not as a backdrop. The winemaker — and with him, anyone who works the land with intention — still knows the ancient gesture of shaping a place according to his own vision and judgment. He chooses the cultivar he believes right for that soil, that light, that history. He decides the orientation of the rows, the shape of the bush vine or the trellis, the variety of roses to plant at the row’s end. Every stake, every tie, every graft is a signature. It is a continuous dialogue between the one who dwells and that which is dwelt in. In the vineyard, space answers back. It allows itself to be changed, transforms, carries the memory of the choices made by those who tend it and those who tended it before. An old vineyard is a stratification of human decisions, of seasons interpreted, of mistakes corrected and instincts confirmed. It is, in the fullest sense, an inhabited environment: not passed through, not consumed, but understood and shaped with care. This is the lifeboat in a sea of concrete. Not a rural nostalgia, not a romantic escape from the city, but the reminder that man still knows, when allowed, how to build belonging. That the sense of place is not a lost inheritance but a dormant capacity, ready to awaken wherever hands can still leave a trace and the earth is willing to receive it. Whoever makes wine, whoever tends a vineyard with respect and intention, is not merely a producer. He is, perhaps without knowing it, the custodian of something larger: the proof that man and his environment can still recognize one another, speak to one another, belong to one another. And that from that recognition something good can be born in a glass — yes, but even before that, in the soul of the one who has not lost his way. Three territory, bound by a single thread

One way to know a wine is through its technical sheet — the grape variety, the alcohol, the serving temperature, the food pairings. But there is another way, slower and truer, that passes through the territory. Through the soil beneath your feet, the air you breathe, the light that shifts depending on where you are. We make wine in three different places, and each of those places has a voice of its own. Three landscapes, three climates, three sensations that cannot be put into words without losing something — but we try all the same. Patti Piccolo, in Alcamo, is a contrada you reach by leaving the town behind, turning your back on the coast and the sound of the sea. The hills of the Trapani interior open here into wide, silent panoramas, marked by rows of vines — mostly Catarratto — and the occasional small house or tool shed: quiet traces of human presence in the landscape, as unassuming as those who work the land without needing to announce themselves. The climate is that of the Sicilian interior: hot summers tempered by wind, nights that cool just enough, a diurnal range that makes the difference between a flat wine and a living one. The soil is sandy on the hillsides, increasingly clayey as you descend — tenacious, generous only to those who work it with patience. Patti Piccolo in July means feeling the heat rise from the ground and the wind that holds it in balance. It means watching the clusters ripen slowly, with that quiet progression that resembles the growth of things destined to last. The sensory experience is one of suspension between high summer and anticipation. In the glass, that tension becomes citrus freshness, salinity, a drinkability that seems almost guileless and yet conceals a precise underlying structure. Moving toward the western coast, the landscape changes completely. The hills give way to the plain, the horizon opens all the way to the sea, and the air turns salty — not metaphorically, but physically: the wind that arrives from the Stagnone carries the salt of the salt flats, deposits it on the vines, enters the Grillo that has grown here for generations. Le Piane Liquide is exactly this: a territory where vineyard and sea regard each other at close range, where the light reflected off the water is unlike any other — white, flat, dazzling in the way particular to western Sicily. The summer is long, hot, dry. The wind is constant, almost obsessive, a maestrale that asks no permission and that, over time, has shaped both the landscape and the vines themselves. The Grillo that grows here carries all of this with it: the minerality of salt, the luminosity of the sea, a salinity that cannot be achieved in the winery but only through years of living in this specific place. To drink a Bianco Maggiore or La Maggiore with your eyes closed is, in some way, to stand looking out over the Stagnone. And then there is Pantelleria. And Pantelleria is something else entirely. A volcanic island seventy kilometres from Africa, where the wind blows with such force that it has compelled the vines to grow low, almost lying against the lava soil, in a training system — the alberello pantesco — recognised by UNESCO as a heritage of humanity. The earth is black, volcanic, porous. The soil absorbs heat during the day and releases it at night, creating a microclimate unlike any other. Zibibbo, the Muscat of Alexandria, grows here as it grows nowhere else — concentrated, aromatic, capable of expressing aromas of dried apricot, figs, honey and Mediterranean herbs that seem to arrive from another time. To stand in the vineyard on Pantelleria is to understand immediately why certain wines are possible only there. This is not romanticism: it is agronomy, geology, history. It is a place that gets inside you before you even open the bottle. The thread that holds it all together. Three territories so different from one another might seem like a contradiction for a single winery. In reality they are its greatest wealth and its highest responsibility. Because working in three such distinct places means you cannot afford a single answer that works for all of them. It means listening to each vineyard for what it is, without forcing it to become something else. The thread that connects Alcamo, Marsala and Pantelleria is not a style, not a technique. It is an attitude: the conviction that the best wine is the one that knows where it was born — and shows it in the glass, without needing to explain itself. The power of roots in a changing market

There is a moment, in the life of any sector, when the numbers stop offering reassurance and begin asking questions. Italian wine has been living through this phase for several years now: consumption is declining, volumes are slowing, geopolitical tensions are affecting international trade, and markets are becoming increasingly complex and competitive. And yet, looking carefully at what is happening, a different picture emerges from the one a superficial reading might suggest. More than a crisis, this looks like a transformation. According to the wine trend analysis for 2025–2026 produced by Vinarius, the market is going through a phase in which volume consumption is falling while the overall value of sales is growing. The consumer has changed: better informed, more selective, less inclined toward habitual purchasing and more oriented toward making conscious choices. They are looking for quality, authenticity, sustainability and a genuine connection with the territory of origin. The 2026 Annual Report by Valoritalia captures how, in 2025, still white wines grew by 6.3%, rosés by 5.7% and sparkling wines by 1.7%, while red wines recorded a decline of more than 13%. The market is redrawing its preferences, and it is doing so by following a search for freshness, lightness, balance and drinkability — wines capable of accompanying new consumption habits, more attentive to the quality of the experience than to quantity, without sacrificing complexity or character. Difficulties exist, and there would be little point in denying them. Rising production costs, economic uncertainty and competitive pressure all demand adaptability and strategic vision. However, the Mediobanca Report on the wine sector highlights that 58% of Italy’s leading producers expect sales growth in 2026, while 70% continue to regard the sector as attractive and full of opportunity. The paths forward now seem well defined: diversification of the offer, opening to new markets, sustainable innovation, more effective communication, growth in wine tourism and the building of an increasingly genuine relationship with the customer. On the international front, according to Vinarius, it is above all non-European markets that are sustaining demand for premium Italian wines. The world continues to seek out quality Italian wine, recognising its cultural value as well as its intrinsic worth. The challenge today is not simply to export, but to reach those consumers with the right product, at the right moment, through a narrative that is credible and coherent. In a continually evolving landscape, however, one element remains unchanged: the value of territory. As the Vinbacco analysis of the Italian market highlights, competition is increasingly fought on the ability to express identity, guarantee qualitative continuity and manage sales channels effectively. In a single word: authenticity. Because territory is not merely a geographical origin — it is a heritage of culture, traditions, people and expertise that is reflected in the wine even before it is reflected in the words used to describe it. This is a conviction that has accompanied our history for more than 160 years. A vision that has crossed generations, market shifts and changes in taste without ever losing its bond with its own origins. Today, in a context that increasingly rewards quality, distinctiveness and the ability to tell a true story, this heritage represents a resource more precious than ever. Rallo continues to look to the future by starting from its roots: Alcamo, Marsala, Pantelleria. Different yet profoundly complementary territories that hold within them the most authentic soul of Sicilian winemaking. Places that have always inspired our work and given voice to our wines. Because we believe the future of wine does not belong to those who chase trends, but to those who know how to interpret change while remaining faithful to their own identity. And it is from that identity that we continue to build our tomorrow. The Summer White Wines

There is a precise moment when summer stops being a promise and becomes a certainty. It is when the light changes — slows, turns golden — and the only possible answer is a cool glass in your hands, something that tastes of territory, of the sea, of open air. White wine producers rooted in place, at Rallo summer is not a season: it is the season. The one in which our wines find their most natural, most truthful dimension. We suggest four whites for four different moments — because summer, truly lived, is never the same twice. Lucido — Catarratto, Patti Piccolo · Alcamo Begin here, among the sun-drenched hills of Patti Piccolo, where Catarratto has grown for generations and in August becomes almost transparent under the sun — lucido, luminous. This is the wine of simplicity as the supreme form of elegance: fresh, fragrant, with its citrus vivacity and that spontaneous drinkability you don’t explain, you experience. Eleven degrees, no pretension, pure joy. The wine for light lunches, spaghetti alle vongole, grilled fish with a squeeze of lemon. The wine that doesn’t ask for attention — it earns it. Bianco Maggiore — Grillo, Piane Liquide · Marsala If Lucido is the morning, Bianco Maggiore is the afternoon stretching toward evening. A single-variety Grillo, born among the salt flats of the Stagnone, where the sea enters the vineyards through wind and salt. White blossom, grapefruit, orange blossom — a bouquet that speaks of western Sicily without needing to announce itself. On the palate it is balanced, savoury, mineral, with a persistence that invites you back. Pairing it with a fish couscous or a sea bream in a salt crust is almost an obligation. But it is just as good simply as it is, with the light going down. La Maggiore — Pétillant, Marsala Some people save bubbles for celebrations. We drink them in summer, before dinner, with crudités and good company. La Maggiore is Rallo’s first natural pétillant, fermented in bottle using the ancestral method — naturally sparkling, unfiltered, no tricks. The bubbles are delicate, almost shy. The taste is playful and easy-drinking, with that note of yeast and fresh bread crust that only the ancestral method can give. She is the feminine side of the Maggiore family, and like all well-realised feminine things: she has character without making it felt. Ghibli — Dry Malvasia, Patti Piccolo · Alcamo And then there is this one. The wine you don’t expect. A dry Malvasia with a low alcohol content, contemporary in spirit and precise in character — our answer to those looking for a white that is both rooted and modern. Ghibli is the warm wind that blows from the south, moving through the rows without leaving a trace yet transforming everything it touches. In the bottle it becomes freshness and structure, aroma and salinity, the immediate pleasure and the desire for a second glass. And then a third. Never heavy. Perfect with delicate fish, sublime sipped in good company. Four whites, three territories, one conviction: summer is drunk in white. The Earth speaks

A healthy bunch of grapes already contains everything needed to make a great wine.No corrections, no additives, no alchemy. Just respect. Organic farming is, above all, a matter of awareness. In our vineyards in the Trapani countryside, row by row, plant by plant, every intervention is carried out by hand. The soil is not an inert substrate to be corrected: it is a living ecosystem, populated by countless species of microorganisms that sustain the natural chemical and physical transformations of the earth and nourish the plant and animal biodiversity that surrounds us. “Giving up synthetic chemistry is not a limitation. It is the necessary condition for the territory to truly express itself in the glass.” At the winery, only healthy grapes arrive at the soft press — grapes monitored at every stage of their growth. The result is a wine that carries within it the imprint of the place where it was born: distinctive aromas, a recognisable flavour, an authentic character. No artifice can restore what good farming has already built in the vineyard. The organic philosophy — understood as the enhancement of the grape’s natural qualities and the rigorous application of correct winemaking practices — finds in Rallo wines its fullest expression. This is not marketing: it is simply the way we have always farmed. The land speaks. We listen. Mediterranean Identity

There is a word that comes up often when people talk about Sicilian wine: identity. It is used a great deal, sometimes carelessly, as a label to stick on any bottle with a dialect name or a cave painting on the label. But true identity — the kind you sense on the nose before it ever reaches the palate — is not something you choose at a desk. It is inherited, cultivated, guarded. Or lost, forever. Rallo, the winery that since 1860 has stood on the Marsala seafront facing the Egadi Islands, inside a nineteenth-century baglio, has made Mediterranean identity not a slogan but a daily practice. A posture. A way of inhabiting the landscape. Rallo cultivates vines, wheat and olive trees across three different corners of western Sicily: Alcamo, Marsala and the island of Pantelleria, all within the province of Trapani. Three places that seem almost chosen to prove that the Mediterranean is not a single place but a family of places, each with its own language, each with its own character. Marsala: not just sea, but an infinite linear landscape. A light that cuts horizontally, salt in the air, wind that never stops. It is here that the winery puts down its deepest roots, here that time moves with the slowness of Marsala wine ageing in the barrel. Alcamo: not just land, but a welcoming embrace that receives everything. These are the gentle hills where most of the vineyard hectares extend, in the contrada of Patti Piccolo — hills that speak of the Sicilian interior, of silence, of clay that absorbs the heat of the day and releases it slowly into the night. Pantelleria: not just wind, but sinuous curves revealing an untamed territory. The island that refuses to be tamed, where Zibibbo grows close to the ground to escape the fury of the scirocco, cultivated in the traditional alberello pantesco style, a UNESCO heritage since 2014. In wine, Mediterranean identity goes by the name of native grape variety. This is not oenological nationalism — it is the biology of memory: every ancient variety carries inscribed in its genetics centuries of adaptation to a climate, a soil, a human way of living the land. Rallo has chosen to be, above all, a territory-driven white wine producer. A countercurrent choice in an era when the Mediterranean is often told through powerful reds and toasted oak. We instead place our faith in white: in Catarratto, Grillo, Insolia, Zibibbo. Varieties that have existed on these shores since before wine became a commercial category. At the end of the twentieth century, the Vesco family took over the winery, diversifying the product range and embarking on a determined conversion of the vineyards to organic farming. Today it is Andrea Vesco who leads Cantine Rallo with dedication, personally overseeing every stage of production — from vine to bottle — with the support of a team of over twenty people. The organic choice, within the context of Mediterranean identity, is not a technical detail. It is a cultural position. It means rejecting the logic of maximum yield in favour of balance. Throughout the vineyards, numerous islands of biodiversity are preserved, reducing the incidence of disease. It means recognising that living soil produces living grapes, and that living grapes produce wine capable of saying something true. In the winery, the approach is one of responsibility toward the land — a love of the environment, sustainability, and balance in all things. And further still: wine must be an ethical product that expresses the face of the landscape and the depths of the human spirit. So, what is Mediterranean identity? It is a question worth sitting with unhurriedly — just as one does with a wine that deserves a few minutes in the glass before being drunk. Mediterranean identity is not nostalgia. It is not longing for a lost antiquity, nor the postcard of a motionless landscape. It is, rather, the capacity to make the most of what one is — history, soil, climate, varieties — without being imprisoned by them. It is the creative tension between roots and renewal, between tradition and contemporary awareness. In wine, Mediterranean identity means resisting international standardisation. It means betting that the Grillo of Marsala, with its aromatic profile, needs no Chardonnay to be great. That the Catarratto of Alcamo, with its lively acidity and mineral freshness, has nothing to apologise for. It means, finally, understanding that the Mediterranean is not a backdrop. It is a subject. A demanding interlocutor that calls for respect, continuity, care. Rallo knows this well: every harvest is a conversation with this sea, this wind, this light. And every bottle is a reply. A reply, still in Sicilian. A territory, three stories

There is one grape variety that tells the story of Sicily better than any other: Catarratto.Deep roots in tradition, a rare ability to mirror its territory faithfully — and always surprisingly. From this conviction, our trilogy was born: three wines, a single grape, a story in which every bottle is a different chapter. Because Catarratto is the variety in which Rallo believes deeply, the one we experiment with, invest in, and continue to question. AV01, natural Catarratto. No added sulphites, no mediation. This is Catarratto in its most authentic form, capable of conveying with absolute honesty the character of Sicilian soil and sun. A wine for those who like to listen before they drink. Raw, vital, imperfectly true — like everything that has no need of masks. In every bottle, nature is not corrected. It is simply accompanied. Born from the 2025 harvest, Lucido is our newest addition to the family. Fresh, immediate, made to be opened and enjoyed without waiting. In every sip you find the variety’s signature aromas: white blossom, a faintly saline minerality, that citrus tension which is the grape’s own handwriting. A wine of readiness and sincerity, perfect for those who want Catarratto in its most vivid expression, right now. Only the finest grapes, selected with meticulous care, give life to Beleda — born from a refusal to settle, it carries into the bottle the complexity of those who know how to wait. An elegant, structured wine, made for those with the patience to open it years after buying it, and the curiosity to discover what Catarratto becomes when time works alongside it. Beleda is not an answer. It is a promise. Three bottles, one territory. The Rallo Catarratto Trilogy is an invitation to explore the facets of an extraordinary grape variety — from the natural frankness of AV01 to the immediate joy of Lucido, through to the patient elegance of Beleda.A project still unfolding, because Catarratto has not yet finished surprising us. Wine Paris 2026

Wine Paris 2026 The most important international wine fair has just concluded, and once again Rallo Azienda Agricola took part with the Sicilian delegation, supported by IRVO (Regional Institute of Wine and Oil), to share our vision of Sicilian wine with the world. “It is important for us to participate in this fair,” explains Andrea Vesco, “because it is the leading international trade event in the sector, the one that is growing the fastest and establishing itself among both producers and buyers.” Wine Paris represents a privileged meeting point between the world’s finest producers and importers, distributors, sommeliers, journalists, and buyers from specialized large-scale retail. It is a unique opportunity to consolidate existing business relationships and open up new markets. What truly makes our presence effective is the collective dimension of the Sicilian delegation. “Being together with other colleagues, with the support of the Institute, was essential,” Andrea emphasizes, “because it facilitates participation and adds value through the strength of the region, which certainly goes beyond individual participation.” Presenting ourselves as “System Sicily,” with a strong and recognizable territorial identity, multiplies the visibility of each individual producer and strengthens the overall qualitative perception of the island’s offering. In an increasingly competitive market, the ability to work as a team becomes a decisive asset. Within this collective framework, each producer brings their own identity. Rallo’s is clear: extreme specialization in native grape varieties from the province of Trapani, cultivated exclusively organically. No dispersion, no chasing international varietal trends, but absolute focus on what this territory does best: Catarratto, Grillo, Zibibbo, Insolia, Malvasia. These are grape varieties that have taken root here for centuries, evolving alongside the climate, soil, and local culture. We work with these varieties both vertically and horizontally: exploring the same grape in different expressions (such as the four versions of Catarratto — Carta d’Oro, Beleda, AV01, Lucido) and across different vintages, showing how time and climatic conditions influence their character. “The Sicilian value,” reflects Andrea Vesco, “perhaps lies in tradition, together with the possibility of interpreting the island in different ways.” Sicilian winemaking is experiencing an extraordinary phase: supported by an exceptionally rich ampelographic heritage, it is reinventing itself through innovative production approaches. A return to essentials, to naturalness, to trust in spontaneous processes — precisely the philosophy that guides our organic and biodynamic production. An important shift concerns the relationship with alcohol. “It will be oriented toward lower alcohol levels,” Vesco predicts. “High alcohol content is no longer synonymous with quality. Today, balance is becoming predominant.” Consumers are seeking drinkability, freshness, and elegance. Wines that are less demanding, more immediate, and capable of engaging new generations. Participation in Wine Paris 2026 was much more than simply attending a trade fair: it was a moment of dialogue with the international market, an opportunity to test new proposals, gather feedback, and identify emerging trends. It was the chance to tell the story of our wines in person — and to let people taste firsthand the difference made by organic farming, manual harvesting, respectful vinification, and patient aging. Harvest 2025

Harvest 2025 The 2025 vintage was characterized by a more abundant rainfall regime compared to the previous year, with precipitation concentrated mainly during the winter months of February and March. This distribution of rainfall provided the vines with the water reserves necessary for vigorous vegetative growth, while temperatures, although slightly above the seasonal average, never reached excessive peaks. The wide temperature fluctuations between day and night protected the vineyards from heat stress, promoting balanced and gradual ripening. The presence of water in the soil boosted the vegetative growth of the vines, which showed optimal health conditions and luxuriant development from the earliest phenological stages. The crucial phases of flowering and fruit set proceeded in the best possible way, ensuring the regular progression of the vegetative cycle and laying the foundations for quality production. Careful vineyard management enabled the achievement of optimal vegetative-productive balance. Particular attention was paid to monitoring grape ripeness and selecting the ideal moments for harvesting each variety, a fundamental aspect for preserving organoleptic characteristics and ensuring the expression of terroir. From a phytosanitary perspective, the vintage presented no significant issues, with the exception of some limited plots affected for the first time by leafhoppers. The harvested grapes were healthy and achieved optimal aromatic and phenolic maturity. The grapes reached full maturity with sugar levels that were not excessively high, a characteristic that will result in wines with lower alcohol content compared to the average of recent vintages, promising products characterized by greater harmony and elegance. Conditions were particularly favorable for white grape varieties, especially Catarratto, Zibibbo, and Grillo, which showed excellent quality characteristics. Red grapes also recorded optimal yields. The only significant problem encountered remains the growing shortage of labor, an increasingly pressing issue in the wine sector that requires structural solutions and a rethinking of the industry’s working dynamics. At the same time, considering the ongoing climate changes, there is an emerging need to reflect on the growing difficulties in managing vine diseases using exclusively organic products, and to evaluate at the legislative level a greater approach to integrated pest management, a strategy that could offer more effective and sustainable solutions. Rallo Discover, Mosella 22-25 novembre 2024

Rallo Discover, Mosella 22-25 novembre 2024 Once upon a time there was a winding river, flowing through the bed of a valley with very steep slopes on top of which stood marvelous castles surrounded by vineyards. Once upon a time there was the Moselle in its most fascinating and history-rich stretch, the German one, where one of the most interesting wine regions in the world lies. And then… and then there was us…! #RalloDiscover is a project born from collaboration with a dear friend of ours, Francesco Pensovecchio, as well as an impeccable guide on the journey just concluded, which saw us as protagonists discovering a marvelous territory devoted mainly to the production of white wines. It was fantastic to discover how the sunlight we are accustomed to is exploited to the maximum elsewhere, thanks to the steep slopes, the exposure of the vineyards and the river that reflects it. It is the vineyards that make this landscape unique in the world: the traditional training system of this area, the “Moselpfahlerziehung”, employed since the 1st century by the Romans, requires that each vine be fixed to a single stake and that the two main canes be bent and tied together, sometimes even forming a heart. The soil consists mainly of slate and gives mineral notes on the palate and a very pronounced acidity. #RalloDiscover is a format aimed at younger people that we will certainly repeat next year, four days of discoveries and exchange in search of unique territories.
