AV01 Catarratto Rallo – A Naturally Rooted Organic Wine
Every story has a beginning—a symbolic day that marks the start of everything. For AV01, that day was September 7, 2017. It was a Thursday; the week was drawing to a close, and the Sicilian heat hinted at a well-deserved weekend swim.
The ninety-fifth harvest at Pattipiccolo was still underway, though many of the precious grapes—especially the golden ones—had already arrived at the cellar. At 10 o’clock sharp, a special moment awaited: the start of a new project. Andrea and Aldo walked the vineyard from end to end, tasting, touching, and evaluating the clusters until they chose a single plot of Catarratto—one among them all.
Their conversation that day was rich with insight, balancing tradition and innovation. Their goal: to craft a natural Catarratto that expressed its terroir, telling the story of the grapes and the land they came from. The result was 3,000 bottles of Rallo, vinified in the style of Aldo Viola.
Natural wine has no fixed guidelines; it is made in the vineyard, respecting the balance and strength of the plants and nurturing the soil’s fertility. Aldo explained then—still true today—that natural wine is a philosophy, a mindset, more than a method: a careful, patient approach that honors the vine and the land.
Years have passed since that September morning, and Rallo continues to produce AV01 independently, garnering praise from both critics and consumers.
Elegance, not perfection, is its hallmark. While casual consumers often seek wines that are instantly pleasing—smooth, low in acidity, barely perceptible tannins—true elegance goes deeper. It is not flawless; it is subtle, balanced, and measured. Like life itself, elegance in wine is earned, savored, and valued for its understated harmony rather than superficial perfection.
AV01 Catarratto Rallo embodies a philosophy of authenticity. Defined by the absence of excess, exaggerated richness, or ostentatious opulence, it may seem unconventional to those seeking traditional perfection. Yet it is precisely this subtle “imperfection” that marks true elegance—a wine born from thoughtful care and a pursuit of its genuine nature.
Visually, it reveals a luminous straw-yellow hue, slightly cloudy, hinting at its natural origins. On the nose, it impresses with clarity and evolving complexity: fresh, floral, and citrus-scented. Its bouquet captivates, unfolding gracefully with subtle and intricate nuances.
Straight to the Heart
From the moment it is poured, the aromas of the Sicilian countryside unfold: the warmth of the blazing sun, the scent of hay, rosemary, and sage. Notes of small yellow flowers mingle with subtle hints of licorice and curry, forming an intense and persistent bouquet. Some may even detect a touch of marasca cherry, adding an unexpected layer of complexity. Bold yet refined, the wine reveals a clear minerality, perceptible both on the nose and the palate.
After a few minutes of aeration, its aromatic spectrum expands further, unveiling gentle saline notes that integrate harmoniously with its structure. On the palate, it is dry, savory, and fresh, with surprising energy and vitality. Skin contact imparts subtle tannins, giving the white wine a notable structure and an almost “chewy” sensation. The fruit concentration is so vivid that each sip becomes irresistibly captivating.
Our ambition is for the wine, in all its complexity, to reach the heart directly, unmediated—simple, immediate, and evocative. It should stir emotions and satisfy the longing for authenticity and fleeting beauty. This philosophy extends to its packaging: a distinctive label that captures attention and conveys the depth of the organoleptic and cultural experience contained in a single sip.
The label
The inspiration for the AV01 label comes from our story—one that began in Alcamo, amid fields of wheat, barley, and a few scattered vineyards. Every authentic story requires a central figure, and ours is Andrea. Known to all who know Rallo, Andrea passionately coordinates the many professionals involved in the care and growth of the winery. Personally overseeing every stage—from grape cultivation to bottling—he ensures that each sip of Rallo consistently reflects quality and authenticity.
Andrea was the starting point, the face and soul of this project, including its graphic expression. The label is a tribute to him, to our vineyards, and to our philosophy. It is more than packaging: it conveys the identity of our production site more faithfully than conventional labels. The grape variety itself is prominently featured, almost like a personal signature, forming an integral part of the design.
The Rallo logo, positioned at the bottom right as on all our labels, takes on special significance here: it rests like the earth from which our wine originates. Aside from the gold-yellow accent used for “Catarratto Orange,” the label employs only black and white, symbols of purity and essentiality. Its minimalist design, free of excess, is direct and immediate, communicating the essence of AV01 at first glance.
