LaCuba — A White Wine of Distinction

LaCuba is an outstanding white wine, capable of reviving and enhancing a classic, identity-defining grape variety of Sicilian oenology. Deeply rooted in the Marsala area, this land has safeguarded the secrets of Grillo for centuries.

Rallo’s ambition has been to craft a wine that embodies a delicate balance between technical innovation and a respectful recovery of tradition—an ideal bridge between past and future, honoring historical memory while embracing modern vinification techniques.

Long relegated to a supporting role as a base grape for Marsala, Grillo reveals its extraordinary expressive potential when vinified on its own. Perfectly suited to the Mediterranean climate and sandy-loam soils of Marsala, this native Sicilian variety produces wines of great personality and character, rich in unique aromatic nuances that narrate the thousand-year-old story of Sicilian viticulture

LaCuba showcases the extraordinary qualities and expressive versatility of Grillo. The vineyards that bring this wine to life sink their roots deep into the heart of the Marsala countryside, a territory distinguished by a unique and unrepeatable microclimate. Here, sea breezes rich in salt mingle with inland winds, creating the perfect conditions for a slow and harmonious ripening of the grapes.

The predominantly sandy soils lend the wine its distinctive minerality and crystalline savoriness—hallmarks of its identity. This singular combination of pedoclimatic factors allows for the purest and most authentic expression of the variety.

In the glass, LaCuba shines with a luminous golden hue, capturing the light with reflections that evoke Sicilian sunsets over the Mediterranean.

On the nose, LaCuba immediately reveals its complex, multifaceted character, unfolding a rich and layered bouquet. Delicate aromas of ripe loquats emerge with elegance, intertwined with the citrusy freshness of Sicilian citron and the exotic hints of passion fruit. Floral notes of broom and blossoming mimosa add softness, while subtle herbal nuances of wild mallow and mint enhance its aromatic depth. A distinctive saline breeze completes the bouquet, evoking the maritime winds that caress the vineyards.

On the palate, LaCuba expresses its full personality and unmistakable character. Vibrant freshness meets glyceric softness, creating a perfectly balanced sip. Its energetic, savory backbone runs through every taste, delivering a sensation of purity and gustatory clarity, compelling the taster toward another sip.

An Excellent Companion for Mediterranean Cuisine

LaCuba is a perfect partner for Mediterranean cuisine, with Sicilian gastronomy shining in particular. Its freshness and savory character pair beautifully with raw fish preparations, such as amberjack and tuna carpaccio, as well as more structured dishes like pesce spada alla ghiotta (swordfish stew) or sarde a beccafico (stuffed sardines).

It also excels alongside fresh Sicilian cheeses, from just-made ricotta to aged primo sale. Its versatility extends to seafood risottos, linguine with clams, and all dishes where the briny flavors of the sea meet the island’s culinary traditions, making LaCuba an indispensable companion at the table.

The label

The label, in both shape and design, evokes Palermo’s Castello della Cuba, built in 1180 at the behest of King William II, set within the vast park of Genoardo — the “garden” or earthly paradise. It serves as a direct tribute to the historical and architectural richness of Arab-Norman Sicily, a period during which the island flourished and played a pivotal role in the Mediterranean.

LaCuba embodies a perfect synthesis of cultures and traditions, just as the wine itself reflects the harmonious union of ancient winemaking heritage and modern vinification techniques. Choosing this name celebrates Sicily’s unique capacity to embrace, integrate, and transform diverse cultural influences into richness, making the island a true melting pot of knowledge and traditions — qualities that resonate in its most authentic wines today.
