The Most Glorious Chapter of Sicily’s History
The name Il Manto is no coincidence; it springs from a profound bond with one of the most illustrious chapters in Sicily’s past. It recalls the precious mantle worn by the Norman king Roger II of Hauteville, who embodied the very ideal of the enlightened medieval sovereign. Raised in cosmopolitan 12th-century Palermo, he had the rare fortune of being educated by refined tutors from the three great cultures that converged in Sicily at the time: Latin, Greek, and Arab. Under his reign, Sicily blossomed into a crossroads of civilizations, a laboratory of peaceful coexistence among diverse peoples, and a flourishing center of artistic and artisanal excellence at the highest European level.
Among the marvels of Norman Palermo stood the royal textile workshops, known in Arabic as Tiraz. These ateliers represented the pinnacle of mastery in weaving and embroidery, producing luxurious fabrics destined for the royal court and for the most prestigious diplomatic gifts. The mantle of Roger II is regarded as one of the greatest masterpieces of this art. Crafted from imperial purple silk—a color reserved for royalty—it was embellished with golden embroideries portraying hunting scenes, Islamic geometric motifs, and symbols of Norman kingship.
The connection between the organoleptic qualities of our Nero d’Avola and the king’s precious mantle is born from a poetic yet deeply meaningful analogy. Like the regal drape, Il Manto reveals a fine texture and a soft embrace, reminiscent of the most exquisite silk. In the language of wine, “texture” describes the gustatory structure—an intricate weave of flavors, aromas, and tactile sensations that unfold on the palate. Il Manto displays a particularly refined texture: silky, well-integrated tannins and a perfectly balanced acidity that harmonizes with the softness of alcohol, creating an enveloping smoothness, like the touch of a precious fabric against the skin.
Just as Roger II’s mantle was finely crafted by the master artisans of the Tiraz, so too is our Nero d’Avola “sculpted” by time and winemaking expertise. Every stage of vinification—from the careful selection of grapes to the refinement process—shapes the details of this liquid masterpiece, creating the harmonious complexity that distinguishes truly great wines. And just as gems were set into the royal fabric to heighten its beauty, so too are aromas and flavors seamlessly woven into the structure of the wine, composing a sensory experience of rare intensity.
Il Manto reveals an intense ruby-red color with garnet reflections, evoking the precious stones adorning the king’s mantle. Its brilliance and clarity speak of meticulous winemaking and perfectly healthy grapes. On the nose, it opens with an elegant and complex bouquet: ripe blackberries, blackcurrant, raspberries, plums, and cherries in liqueur, alongside notes of red fruit preserves, accented by hints of pink pepper and coriander.
On the palate, it is smooth and immediately gratifying, its natural sweetness in perfect balance with fresh acidity. The wine expands gracefully, unveiling a well-crafted structure where present yet silky tannins contribute to the enveloping softness that defines this Nero d’Avola.
Il Manto lends itself beautifully to family lunches and dinners, thanks to its easy drinkability and remarkable versatility in pairings. It is a wine that sets the atmosphere without ever imposing itself. Il Manto embodies our vision of accessible elegance: a wine carrying with it an important history and undeniable quality, while remaining approachable and enjoyable even for those discovering the world of fine Sicilian wines for the very first time.
A Product of Great Elegance
Just as Roger II’s mantle symbolized the perfect fusion of diverse traditions, Il Manto aspires to be a bridge between Sicily’s illustrious winemaking heritage and the expectations of today’s discerning consumer. Each bottle becomes a small ambassador of Sicily to the world, carrying not only the flavors of the land, but also the history, culture, and artistry of an island that has always embraced and transformed external influences into something unique and original.
Il Manto is not merely a Nero d’Avola; it is a liquid storyteller—speaking of kings and artisans, of culture and beauty, of tradition and innovation. It is a wine that invites contemplation, turning every tasting into a journey through Sicilian history.
